Three Smart Outside Lights Transforming a Garden in Arborfield

Recommendations are always particularly appreciated because they mean somebody was pleased enough with my previous work to pass my details on.

The new customer and his young family had recently moved into a new-build property. As is often the case with new homes, the electrical installation was modern, but there were still a few things they wanted to add to make the house and garden work better for them.

The main project was to install a power supply to a new log cabin in the garden. The cabin is positioned close to the detached garage, which made the route practical, although the overall project still required careful planning. That work is currently partway through, but one section has already made a noticeable difference: three new up-and-down wall lights fitted to the outside of the garage.

Getting the Position of Outside Lights Right

The garage wall faces into the garden, so it was a very good location for decorative lighting. The customer had chosen three attractive wall sconces that project light both upwards and downwards.

Although installing three lights may sound fairly straightforward, their positions make a big difference to the finished appearance. If they are slightly uneven or installed too high or too low, it becomes especially noticeable once they are switched on.

Before starting, we considered how the fittings would sit across the wall. The three lights were positioned centrally and spaced evenly, creating a balanced appearance when viewed from the garden.

During daylight, the fittings look neat and understated. In the evening, the upward and downward beams form patterns on the wall and make the garage feel like part of the landscaped garden rather than simply a separate building at the back of it.

Smart GU10 Bulbs for More Control

The customer wanted to use smart GU10 bulbs inside the fittings. These can be controlled through an app, allowing him to switch the lights on and off, adjust their colour and create a schedule.

Scheduling can be particularly useful for outside lighting. The lights can come on automatically in the evening and switch off later without somebody having to remember them. Different colours and brightness settings can also change the atmosphere, whether the family is sitting outside, entertaining guests or simply looking out into the garden.

It is important that the light fittings themselves are suitable for outdoor use and provide the necessary protection against moisture. The smart bulbs must also be compatible with the chosen fittings and switching arrangement. In this case, the fittings were designed for replaceable GU10 lamps, giving the customer flexibility if he wants to change or replace the bulbs later.

Most of the Work Is Hidden from View

From the garden, all you can see are three neatly positioned lights. However, much of the actual installation work took place inside the garage.

The cables needed to be routed carefully between the supply and each fitting. White PVC conduit had already been installed in the garage for the sockets and switches, so I continued with the same type and colour for the new lighting cables.

This may sound like a small detail, but it makes a big difference. Adding a completely different cable-management system would have made the garage look untidy and as though the lighting had been added as an afterthought.

I measured and installed the conduit so that the new sections followed the existing arrangement. The bends, joints and cable routes needed to look consistent while still allowing the three outside lights to be supplied correctly.

Good electrical work is not only about the part visible from outside. The cables, connections and protection behind the finished installation are just as important. I always try to leave those areas neat because the customer may use the garage every day and will continue seeing the installation long after the work is complete.

Helping With a Few Additional Jobs

While I was working at the property, the customer also asked me to help with a few other bits and pieces, including mounting a soundboard on the ceiling.

It was not part of the original lighting plan, but if I am already on site and can safely help with a smaller practical task, I am normally happy to do so. These additional details often help the overall project move forward, particularly for a family settling into a new home.

A few evenings later, the customer sent me a photograph of the three lights switched on. The wall was illuminated evenly, the up-and-down effect looked excellent, and the smart bulbs gave the garden a modern and welcoming atmosphere.

That evening photograph was probably the best confirmation that the planning and the less-visible work inside the garage had been worthwhile. The finished result looks simple, but achieving that clean appearance required careful positioning, matching materials and attention to detail.
