It seems quite appropriate to be writing about an air conditioning electrical supply after working through some of the hottest days of the summer. This recent job in Barkham, near Wokingham, involved installing a new dedicated electrical circuit and outdoor isolator ready for an air conditioning unit at a private nursery
The site was already familiar to me because I had worked there before. On my previous visit, I installed the electrical supply and completed the wiring for a log cabin used by the nursery. That project included a new power supply, sockets and lighting, with the cabling installed neatly in white conduit throughout the cabin.
This time, the customer contacted me with a slightly different request. An air conditioning unit was going to be installed in one of the existing log cabins used by the children, and the air conditioning engineer needed a suitable electrical supply and isolator ready for the outdoor unit.
Considering the temperature on the day, I could certainly understand why air conditioning was needed, particularly with very young children and babies spending time inside the building.
Planning the Electrical Supply with the Air Conditioning Engineer
Before starting the installation, I spoke with the air conditioning engineer who would be fitting the actual aircon unit.
I already knew the engineer, which made communication straightforward. He explained exactly where the outdoor unit was going to be positioned and where he wanted the electrical isolator installed.
This type of communication between trades is important.
The electrical isolator needs to be positioned where the air conditioning engineer can easily connect the outdoor unit and safely isolate the equipment when required. Installing it in the wrong place could mean additional cables, unnecessary alterations or simply an awkward installation later.
Once the position was confirmed, I could plan the cable route and start the electrical work.
Running a New Armoured Cable to the Log Cabin
The new circuit required approximately 15 metres of cable from the electrical supply to the air conditioning isolator position.
For this installation, I used armoured cable suitable for the route and the environment.
Most of the work was completed outdoors, which was probably fortunate considering how hot it was inside the buildings that day. The cable was carefully routed and clipped neatly underneath the log cabin before continuing to the final isolator position.
Running cables neatly is something I always pay attention to, particularly on outdoor installations. Even if a cable is underneath a building or partly hidden from normal view, I still want it properly supported and installed neatly.
Once the cable reached the correct position, I installed the outdoor isolator ready for the air conditioning engineer to make the final connection to his equipment.

The Quietest Fuse Box Connection I Have Ever Made
The most entertaining part of this job happened when I needed to make the final connection at the fuse box.
It was right in the middle of the day and, being a private nursery, several of the younger children were asleep. Some of the children were only around six months old, while others were approximately one to one and a half years old.
Waking everyone up was definitely not part of the plan.
Normally, electrical work can involve drilling, tools, footsteps and generally making a reasonable amount of noise. On this occasion, drilling was absolutely not an option.
I had to quietly make my way inside and complete the final connection at the consumer unit as carefully as possible.
There were several small fans running around the nursery because of the heat. Thankfully, they created plenty of white noise, which probably helped me.
I slowly completed the connection, checked everything and quietly made my way back outside.
Mission accomplished. Nobody woke up.
It is probably not a skill listed on an electrician's qualification certificate, but sometimes working in customers' properties and businesses requires a little flexibility and awareness of what is happening around you.
Why Air Conditioning Circuits Need to Be Planned Properly
As we experience hotter summers in the UK, I expect to see more air conditioning units being installed in homes, nurseries, garden rooms, offices and outbuildings.
From an electrical point of view, it is important to check the requirements of the air conditioning equipment before installing the supply.
Depending on the unit, the electrical circuit may need its own protection and a suitable local isolator positioned close to the outdoor equipment. The cable size and protective device also need to be selected correctly for the equipment being installed.
This is why I always prefer to communicate with the air conditioning engineer before completing the electrical work.
A short conversation about the unit and its position can prevent problems later and helps both trades complete their part of the installation efficiently.
Working Outdoors During the Summer Heat
Most of this Barkham installation was completed outside on another very hot day.
Outdoor electrical work is something I genuinely enjoy, especially when the weather is good, although this particular day was probably a little warmer than necessary.
Ironically, I was working in the heat to install the electrical supply for equipment designed specifically to solve the problem of heat.
The installation itself took a few hours. Once the armoured cable had been routed, securely clipped and connected to the new isolator, I completed the necessary electrical testing and checked the new circuit.
The electrical side was then ready for the air conditioning engineer.
From what I understand, the actual aircon unit should be installed within the next few days. Considering the recent temperatures and the age of some of the children using the nursery, I imagine it will be put to good use very quickly.
