When the installation day finally arrived, another interesting challenge presented itself. The homeowner had kindly arranged access while they were away, allowing me to complete the work independently throughout the day.
The consumer unit was located inside a hallway cupboard, leaving very little room to work. Confined spaces always require extra patience and careful organisation. Every cable needs to be identified correctly, safely disconnected and reconnected inside the new consumer unit while maintaining neat workmanship and allowing enough room for future maintenance.
There was also one practical issue that had nothing to do with electrics. As I hadn't been given a front door key, I needed to make sure I didn't accidentally lock myself outside while carrying tools and materials between the van and the property. A few strategically placed clothes prevented the front door from locking itself, which turned out to be a surprisingly effective solution and certainly avoided an awkward situation halfway through the day!
