Electrical Installations for Your Garden Building
Thinking about turning your log cabin, summer house or garden room into a comfortable space you can enjoy throughout the year?
Whether you’re planning a home office, a small gym, a workshop or simply somewhere to relax, having the right electrical installation can make a big difference.
At IGT Electrical Ltd, we provide electrical installations for log cabins, summer houses, garden rooms and other outdoor buildings across Wokingham, Reading, Bracknell and surrounding areas.
With over 15 years of electrical experience, we’ve worked on various garden buildings, from small summer houses needing just a couple of sockets and lights to fully equipped garden offices with heating, air conditioning and outdoor lighting.
Every building is different, so we always start by understanding how you intend to use the space before recommending the most suitable electrical installation.

One of the first things we consider is how much electricity your garden building will need.
For example, a summer house with a few lights and sockets will have very different requirements from a garden office with electric heating, air conditioning and several pieces of equipment.
For most installations, we recommend running a dedicated electrical supply from the main property using steel wire armoured (SWA) cable, which is designed for suitable outdoor installations.
Depending on the electrical demand, cable length and installation conditions, we commonly use cable sizes between 2.5mm² and 6mm², although larger cables may sometimes be necessary.
Where practical, the cable can be neatly routed along suitable fences, walls or other structures, sometimes discreetly behind garden planting. This can help avoid unnecessary trench digging, which may add cost and disruption.
In some smaller installations, it may be possible to take a limited supply from an existing socket circuit, provided the existing electrical installation is suitable and the additional load is properly assessed.
However, our preferred approach is generally to install a dedicated circuit with appropriate electrical protection, providing a reliable supply for the garden building.

Once the electrical supply reaches your garden building, we can plan the internal installation around how you intend to use the space.
Most log cabins are constructed from timber, so surface-mounted wiring is often the most practical option. It avoids unnecessary cutting into the structure and allows the electrical installation to remain accessible.
We typically use neat white mini trunking or PVC conduit, depending on the finish you prefer.
We can supply and install:
We can also install suitable customer-supplied light fittings and accessories.
We pay particular attention to socket positions, cable routes and the overall appearance of the installation. After all, if you’ve invested in a lovely timber garden building, you don’t want untidy cables spoiling the finished look.

One of our recent projects involved installing electricity in a timber log cabin that the customer wanted to use as both a home office and a small gym.
The first stage involved running just over 35 metres of armoured cable from the main property to the garden building. Part of the cable route went beneath existing paving, so careful planning was needed to bring the supply across the garden while keeping disruption to a minimum.
Once the supply was in place, we returned to complete the internal electrical installation.
We installed four double sockets, a light switch and a customer-supplied pendant light fitting. As the cabin was constructed from timber, we used white surface-mounted trunking to keep the cables neatly contained.
With this type of installation, the small details really matter. Straight cable runs, tidy corners and carefully positioned accessories help achieve a clean finish without spoiling the natural appearance of the timber walls.
The customer was particularly pleased with how neat everything looked, which was lovely feedback to receive.
The finished cabin now has electrical points positioned for office equipment and the gym area, making it a practical space for both working and exercising.
It’s a good example of how we approach these installations: planning the electrical supply properly, understanding the customer’s requirements and taking care with the finished appearance.

Outdoor lighting is often one of the finishing touches that makes a garden building look particularly attractive in the evening.
We can install decorative up-and-down wall lights, soffit spotlights, entrance lighting and other suitable outdoor fittings.
One option we particularly like is a wireless lighting switch system.
This allows you to switch the outside lights of your log cabin on and off directly from inside your main house, without running additional switch cables between the buildings.
It’s particularly useful during the darker winter months when you want to illuminate the garden before stepping outside.
We can also install motion sensors, timers and other suitable lighting controls.

If you’re planning to use your garden building as a home office or gym, it’s worth thinking about your electrical requirements before the installation begins.
A garden office may need several sockets for computers, monitors, printers and other equipment, as well as heating or air conditioning.
A garden gym might require good overhead lighting, sockets for exercise equipment and additional ventilation.
We always recommend considering the furniture layout and equipment positions before deciding where sockets and switches should go.
A little planning at the beginning can save unnecessary changes later.

Garden buildings are exposed to different environmental conditions compared with rooms inside your home.
Moisture, temperature changes, cable routes and timber construction all need to be considered when designing the electrical installation.
Before starting work, we assess the existing electrical supply, earthing arrangements, circuit protection and anticipated electrical load.
All installations are carried out in accordance with the applicable requirements of BS 7671 Wiring Regulations.
Once the work is completed, we carry out the appropriate inspection and testing and provide the relevant electrical certification. Building Regulations notification is also arranged where required.
As a NAPIT registered electrician, we take pride in providing safe, practical and neatly finished electrical installations.

We provide electrical installations for log cabins, summer houses and garden rooms throughout Wokingham and surrounding areas, including Reading, Bracknell, Winnersh, Woodley, Earley, Crowthorne, Finchampstead and Arborfield.
Whether your garden building is already installed or you’re still planning the project, we’re happy to discuss your requirements.
Sometimes all that’s needed is a simple installation with a few sockets and lights. Other projects may require a dedicated consumer unit, additional circuits and more detailed planning.
Our aim is always the same: to provide a safe, reliable and tidy electrical installation that works for the way you intend to use your garden space.
