There are some electrical jobs that are quick and straightforward, and then there are jobs that turn into full-scale missions.

PAT Testing for a Busy London Office During the Summer Heatwave
PAT Testing for a Busy London Office During the Summer Heatwave

Recently, we carried out a large-scale PAT testing project for a busy office in London, right opposite the famous Natural History Museum. This was not a small office with a handful of desks and computers. This was a proper commercial environment with a large number of appliances, workstations, monitors, extension leads, chargers, and office equipment spread across multiple areas.

The testing took two full days, with the second day turning into a very long one indeed. We started around 8am and did not finish until nearly 9pm. Luckily, the second day fell on the bank holiday Monday, which actually worked in everyone’s favour. No staff in the office meant no interruptions, no meetings, no desks occupied, and no worries about disconnecting equipment while people were trying to work. Just peace, quiet, and the repetitive rhythm of PAT testing equipment one item at a time.

Outside, London was absolutely roasting in the heatwave, but thankfully the office air conditioning kept things comfortable indoors. Standing by the windows during breaks, with a view across towards the museum and the busy streets below, definitely made the long hours a little more enjoyable. Throughout this blog, I have also included a few pictures from the project, including some examples of failed appliances and damaged equipment that had to be removed from service. It is always a good reminder that even everyday office items can develop faults over time without anyone noticing.

What Is PAT Testing and Why Is It Important?

PAT testing, short for Portable Appliance Testing, is the process of inspecting and electrically testing portable electrical equipment to make sure it is safe to use. In office environments, this can include computers and monitors, kettles and kitchen appliances, extension leads, chargers and docking stations, printers and photocopiers, desk fans and heaters, cleaning equipment, and server and IT equipment. A lot of businesses assume that because equipment is working, it must be safe.

Unfortunately, that is not always the case. Over time, cables can become damaged, plugs can loosen, appliances can overheat, and extension leads can get overloaded. In busy offices, especially where equipment is constantly moved around or plugged in and out, faults can easily go unnoticed. That is exactly why PAT testing is important. It helps identify potential electrical dangers before they become serious problems.

Need Professional PAT Testing for Your Office?

If your business, office, or commercial property requires professional PAT testing, IGT Electrical Ltd can help. We carry out reliable and organised PAT testing for offices, landlords, and commercial premises across London and the South East. For larger offices, we can also arrange testing outside normal working hours to minimise disruption to your business.

The Reality of Large Office PAT Testing

PAT testing large commercial offices is not simply about sticking labels onto appliances. A proper inspection takes time, organisation, and attention to detail. Every appliance needs a visual inspection, earth continuity testing where applicable, insulation testing, functional checks, and accurate labelling and record keeping. On larger projects like this London office, organisation becomes everything. Equipment needs to be logged properly, failed items identified clearly, and certificates produced accurately afterwards. As always, a few items failed testing during the inspection. That is completely normal on larger commercial sites. Faulty appliances were removed from service and placed separately so they could not accidentally be reused. Some of the attached pictures show examples of damaged plugs, worn cables, and appliances that did not meet the required safety standards. This is one of the biggest benefits of PAT testing because it prevents unsafe equipment from remaining in use unnoticed.

Why Offices Should Take Electrical Safety Seriously

Modern offices rely heavily on electrical equipment. Many businesses now have hybrid staff setups, multiple monitors at every desk, chargers everywhere, and more electrical demand than ever before. The problem is that electrical safety often becomes “out of sight, out of mind” until something goes wrong. Regular PAT testing helps businesses reduce the risk of electrical fires, improve staff safety, stay compliant with workplace safety responsibilities, identify damaged equipment early, maintain insurance requirements, and keep records for landlords or audits. For larger offices especially, having a structured PAT testing programme makes a huge difference.

Commercial PAT Testing by IGT Electrical Ltd

At IGT Electrical Ltd, we carry out PAT testing for offices, commercial units, landlords, and businesses across the South East and London areas. We understand that businesses often need testing completed outside normal working hours to avoid disruption. Early mornings, evenings, weekends, and bank holidays are often the best time to get larger testing projects completed efficiently. For bigger offices, planning is key. We work methodically to minimise disruption while ensuring every appliance is properly checked and recorded. Whether it is a small office with a few desks or a large commercial workspace with hundreds of items, the goal stays the same: keeping electrical equipment safe and helping businesses avoid unnecessary risks.

A Long Couple of Days but a Satisfying Result

By the end of the second day, the office was fully tested, labelled, and organised. The failed items were removed, the records completed, and everyone involved was happy with the result. Yes, PAT testing can sometimes feel repetitive, especially during a 13-hour shift, but there is also something satisfying about completing a large project properly and knowing the workplace is now safer than before. And if you are going to spend two long days testing equipment, having a great London view and working in air conditioning during a heatwave definitely helps.
