1) Bathroom Electrical Work in Wokingham & Reading

If you're renovating your bathroom, the electrical work is just as important as the plumbing, tiling and decorating. Bathrooms are classed as special locations under the Wiring Regulations, so every electrical installation needs to be carefully planned, installed, tested and certified.

I run IGT Electrical Ltd, and I have over 15 years of experience carrying out bathroom electrical work in Wokingham and Reading. As a NAPIT registered electrician, I work to the latest Wiring Regulations and provide the appropriate electrical certification once the work has been completed and tested.

Whether you're carrying out a full bathroom refurbishment or simply replacing an extractor fan or mirror light, my aim is to make the electrical side of the project straightforward, well organised and hassle free.

3) Real Bathroom Refurbishment Experience

Bathroom Electrical Work in Wokingham & Reading

A recent bathroom refurbishment shows how I like to work. The customer had already purchased all of the electrical fittings and asked me to check they were suitable for bathroom installation before fitting them. I unpacked every item, particularly the illuminated mirror, to inspect it for damage and confirm it was suitable for the bathroom environment.

The bathroom itself was quite compact, with a tiler working on site at the same time. We coordinated the work carefully so we weren't getting in each other's way, allowing the refurbishment to progress smoothly.

The customer also worked from home, so I organised the installation to keep power interruptions to a minimum wherever possible.

One of the main parts of the project was installing a humidity-controlled extractor fan. I explained how the humidity sensor automatically increases ventilation when moisture levels rise and recommended fitting a separate boost switch, allowing the customer to increase the extraction manually after using the shower.

Small details like these often make a noticeable difference to how well the bathroom performs long after the refurbishment has been completed.

4) Common Concerns Homeowners Have

Bathroom Electrical Work in Wokingham

One question I'm often asked is whether a bathroom fitter can also complete the electrical work.

Many bathroom fitters are excellent at installing bathrooms, but electrical work requires specific knowledge, testing equipment and certification.

One of the most common problems I see is electrical work being completed without carrying out the necessary testing before and after installation. I've also seen installations where the existing protection has not been upgraded to a Type A RCD or RCBO where required.

Another concern is that customers are sometimes left without the correct Electrical Installation Certificate or Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificate, meaning the work may not comply with current regulations. My approach is different. I complete the installation, carry out the required electrical testing, verify the safety of the circuit and issue the appropriate certification where required, giving customers confidence that everything has been completed correctly.

5) Our Bathroom Installation Process

Bathroom Electrical Work in Wokingham

Every project starts with a conversation about what you would like to achieve.

For most bathroom refurbishments, I then visit the property to assess the existing installation before preparing a clear written quotation.

Once the quotation has been accepted, I explain how the work will be completed and coordinate with any other trades on site, including bathroom fitters, plumbers and tilers, so the project runs smoothly without unnecessary delays.

After all the electrical work has been completed, I carry out the required inspection and testing before issuing the appropriate electrical certificate. This organised approach helps keep disruption to a minimum and ensures the project progresses as efficiently as possible. Safe Bathroom Lighting and Ventilation Lighting and ventilation are two of the most important parts of any modern bathroom. I regularly install recessed LED spotlights, decorative wall lights, illuminated mirrors and replacement ceiling lights, ensuring every fitting is suitable for the correct bathroom zone. I also install wall-mounted, ceiling-mounted and inline extractor fans, including humidity-controlled models that automatically respond to moisture levels. These help reduce condensation, mould and damp, creating a healthier environment while protecting the decoration of the room. Choosing the correct products and installing them properly helps ensure reliable performance for many years.
